Tsavo National Park

Tsavo National Park

Expansive savannahs, red elephants, and dramatic landscapes await in one of Kenya's largest national parks.

Overview

Tsavo National Park is Kenya's largest national park, covering nearly 4% of the country's total land area. Divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West by the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, this vast wilderness offers one of Africa's most authentic safari experiences. The park is renowned for its red elephants, which get their distinctive color from bathing in the red volcanic soil. Tsavo East is characterized by flat, dry plains and the Galana River, while Tsavo West features more varied topography with rocky outcrops, volcanic hills, and the crystal-clear Mzima Springs.

Highlights

  • Red elephants of Tsavo
  • Mzima Springs
  • Lugard Falls
  • Diverse wildlife including lions, leopards, and rhinos

Best Time to Visit

June to October (dry season) offers the best wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources. January to February is also excellent. The park is accessible year-round, though some areas may be challenging during heavy rains (April-May, November).

Entry Fees

International visitors: $75 per adult per day. Children and residents have reduced rates. Fees support conservation efforts.

Getting There

Located approximately 240km from Nairobi (4-5 hours drive) and 250km from Mombasa. Accessible by road through several gates. Charter flights available to airstrips within the park.

Wildlife & Nature

Home to the "Big Five" - lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and leopards. The park hosts large herds of red elephants, estimated at over 12,000. Other wildlife includes giraffes, zebras, various antelope species, hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 bird species. The park is also known for the legendary "Man-Eaters of Tsavo" - two maneless male lions that terrorized railway workers in 1898.
